We are frequently reminded of how important our communities are. They provide us with mutual support, meaning, and identity. To be part of a community is a virtuous act. Communities do good.

And there are many communities: the gay community, the yoga community, the recycling community, the immigrant community. As communities, they must be protected because, well, they’re communities.

There seems to be a community centered around every trait in existence. Some traits are chosen and some are inherent. I have yet to come across a single community here in Los Angeles, though, that feels real. Every group that calls itself a community identifies itself around commonalities that are, at their core, meaningless.
